    Cerakote I like.
    So I finally got to make a start on the engine painting. Colour for the head, cylinder block and cases will be aluminium and the covers will be, you guessed it, titanium. Decided to do a test on the sprocket cover. I am not much of a spray painter but I spent long hours on preparation. Totally happy with the result. I am going to do the crankcase bolts this colour too so I painted one to see how it looks. Aluminium will arrive this week so I will paint the cylinder block, flex-hone and store. Then start work on the head and cases.

    Global Warming Needed
    The glacier is melting even slower than usual. On Oct 13th 2015 I posted that I would be switching to Yamaha forks and using the gold-spot calipers from the R1, well they just arrived. I know that this project is slow but things like that don't help. We are building a new house, or should I say trying to build a new house, so that is also wasting vast amounts of time.

    Calipers weigh 1 gram lighter than the 400 items but the pads on these are about 60% worn, so I am sure they will be a smidgen heavier. These apparently use aluminium pistons as opposed to the steel versions on the blue-spot calipers from the earlier models. I have the lower triple clamp now so I will be able to make progress on the front suspension.

    building a house eh, well Burt Monroe would be living in the shed with the bike, and annoying the neighbours with engine tests at dawn...

    Haha Absolutely!
    Well the 'house building' has hit lot of snags. I refuse to build it the Thai way, being as stubborn as a mule, so that is causing a lot of issues; add to that my wife has agreed that she would rather I buy a VMC than spend the money on the new house. Bless her cotton socks :)
    I will blast, paint the head over the next two weeks so can start on the cases and the re-assembly of the engine can proceed.

    The Poor Neglected R4:
    Well, finally some movement. Have my titanium stem to fit the R1 clamp to the 400 steering head but I have binned the Yamaha twin nut system for a clamped nut version. Here is the bottom clamp comparison. I removed two screws from the R1 clamp because I will use titanium and they are about half the weight.

    Nearly a kg lighter in one hit, nice. I have tested the forks for fit and the steering stops work perfectly so I can now get to work on the fairing mount and a bunch of front end stuff. I still have to draw up the new top triple clamp and get it made.

    The top nut, which has its external dimensions modelled from the Ducati part, looks like this when fitted.

    In all seriousness, that's a great colour choice and I'm guessing the Cerakote will be much easier to keep clean than bare aluminium and durable to boot

    They have a huge range of colours and I think lots of them would look good. I will paint the cam cover and a few other bits tomorrow and take a new pic to see how it looks. I am going to use acrylic for the case halves to seal them for blasting too. That way I can fit the damn things inside my little blast box.

    Nice work!
    Just spent a bit of time browsing the Cerakote site, price's are pretty good
    I'm more of a gloss finish person due to it being easier to clean, i might try out their paint's one day
    I reckon that silver you used plus a coat of clear would really bring out a reflective silver finish
