Hi, Im Al from Sydney and I ride a Honda Spada. I just scored another Spada that had been sitting in a guys front yard for almost 2 years. I left a note in his mail box with my number and he sold it to me for $350. I couldn't get the fuel cap opened so I swapped tanks, charged the battery and after a bit of mucking around she fired up, but only for 10 seconds at a time with the choke on. I sprayed half a can of carby clean into her and she ran for a few minutes but any hint of throttle or choke off and it dies. Everything else works so when I get the carbies serviced I think it will be a good thing especially because it has 28000(on the clock?). Cheers
if you're having trouble getting the busted fuel cap off, sometimes you can get the locks to open (to access the bolt underneath it) by hammering a fairly wide flathead screwdriver into the lock, then turning the screwdriver with vise grips. have to turn pretty hard to force the lock but it usually pops it open. sounds kinda sketchy and stupid and will permanently break the lock but it's worked for me twice on two different messed up fuel tank caps nice bikes though, best of luck with the second one
Fir the tank lock try, wd40 morning and night for a couple of days with some key jiggling. It may come good
welcome mate, good score for $350, biggest issue with Spadas is the speedo needle brakes off if they are left in the sun, are yours okay ?
Thanks guys, I will keep trying WD with the lock and if that doesn't work ill take it to the locksmith because Ill want to sell it one day. Both speedo and tacho needles are good on both bikes, Ill try to keep them covered to keep them that way. Does anyone know a good place to get carbs serviced in Sydney? Cheers
Why not have a crack at the carbs yourself ? You get them off the bike, grab some 3bond and a JIS screwdriver, a simple clean would be to pull the bowls off , remove the slow jets, main jets and emulsion tubes soak them in 3bond for a few hours, blow them out with compressed air, and reassemble. Then pop the top caps off, remove the diaphragm and give the needles a good clean and bobs your uncle.. You never know, that's probably all you need to get her running...
I might give it a go but my biggest problem is that my workshop is the back of my Patrol and the missus doesn't like engine parts on the dining table.
Nice pick up with the Spada As for the fuel tank lock I have been informed by locksmith here in Qld to use Inox, worth a try.
Hi Al and welcome. I recently bought a VT250FE (same engine, etc) that needs to have the carbs cleaned, so if you can wait a week or two until I can get to it I can post info and photos for you to follow.
Well in all honesty....you can't blame her. Spend a little time an effort on the carbs and I'm just about certain you'll be cruising sooner rather than later. Keep us posted on your progress, good luck
Just spent an hour (3 stubbies) with inox on the tank lock and no luck, If I keep going Ill break the key. Ill try again tomorrow. Im still not sure if I want to tackle the carbies myself. And Yes, I love the Spada too, Ive got nothing to compare it to but its a lot of fun and seems fast, we will see next month when I take it to the track. Good or bad Ill be posting in the 1/4 mile hall of fame.
You guys convinced me to do the carbies myself. Got them off today but found that one has the choke cable stuck in there because the plastic bolt that holds it in has broken off. Ill try to get it out and glue it back together, any ideas on how to get that out? Hopefully I can fix that, clean them up and get her running tomorrow.
