    Hello.
I have joined this forum as it's time to start rebuilding our one owner 16,000km 1984 registered RG250 that has sat unloved under the house for about 20 years.
The bike has original tyres, chain, brakes and even battery not that they will be much use.

Some shots of it's unhappy state before we cleaned it that other day

The number plate was a fluke.

After a wash it looked a little better

My son and I will have plenty of questions so please humour us.

    Richard

P.s was that number plate a random selection? (if so that is unbelievably lucky lol) if picked whyd you go 500 not 250?

    :welcome:

    nice one!

Under the layer of dirt and grime it looks in excellent shape.

We thrive on questions here so ask away.

Feel free to start a specific rebuild thread :thumb_ups:

Thanks for the response people. What a great community.
The story behind the bike is that we came to Melbourne on a 6 month transfer in 1984 and we had a BMW car on order but due to industrial action in Germany the car was delayed so transport was needed and the little RG250 was purchased from Mick Hone to fill the gap. I knew Mick Hone through my brothers who were heavily involved in production racing with Suzuki in NZ (Castrol 6 Hour etc).
The number plate was a fluke in that we had no control but I suspect there may have been a little assistance from Micks people in the registration process. :D
We did look at buying an RG500 to go with the plate a couple of times but never really got around to it.
The bike was used regularly through till the early 1990s then children arrived. Needless to say the 6 month transfer became 30 years.
FWIW there is also a V-Strom 650 and a Ducati Monster S2r here at home.

I'd give up the Strom for some bikes but not a 250 that has been sitting under the house for 30 years this year. :D

Hope for your sake your wife doesn't read this forum or you'll be eating Coles frozen meat pies for a month while living in the shed. Hang on is that such a bad thing?

I'm loving the numbers of people restoring old two bangers. May they never die.

After the warm welcome to the community I received I just thought I'd post an update.
We have now sold the RG it was picked up by it's new owner yesterday 29 years and 11 months after it was first taken into our possession. The bike has gone to a very good home to a person I have known since production racing days in NZ in the 1970s. It will be restored and loved the way it should be.
After having a detailed look at the RG the work involved in restoring it while not complicated was extensive. It really needs a complete strip down and rebuild and I don't have the patience or space to have it in pieces for 12 months while restoring it part by part and replacing all the bearings and seals and doing brake and carb rebuilds.
My son has his eye on a nice 1978 SR500 that is a goer and road ready but not perfect and will be an ideal bike to learn maintenance and maybe do some small scale mods to. My daughter is looking at a CB125 as a first bike so perhaps you will see her here when she upgrades. :D
Thanks again for the welcome. I'll pop back from time to time to see what is happening here.

    Edit:
BTW. We kept the number plate.
