You also have to wonder, have they gone a little too far with the weight loss program or maybe forgot to do a full stress analysis of the chassis design.

Unusual for a top fuel car to break there (in front of the driver) as the weak point of the frame (where they cut and reweld the top tubes) is between the engine and driver so the heavy engine will break away from the driver in a crash and not crush the driver.

Completely agree. They used to always break behind the driver. Seems the weak point has moved to in front of them now. which is a pit scary. Phil Lamattina's car broke in a similar spot at Willowbank a few years back.

I think there's an element of both. I'm pretty sure the drivers will be asking that particular chassis maker to have a closer look. They design the modern Top Fuel chassis to bend so that the chassis helps get the power to the ground. They've been bending for many years, but breaking wasn't ever part of the plan. Alan Johnson always asked for certain mods to be made to his frames/chassis and they tended to break behind the driver a lot of the time. The sanctioning body might have to place a run limit on frames if it becomes a regular issue. Either that or to limit the amount of downforce the rear wings generate. The front wing does a bit, but that rear wing is an amazing piece of kit.

Just an observation, but it appears to me that the aero on the front has increased in size/down force over the years. It wouldn't suprise me if the chassis has not been adjusted to suit.

The front wing isn't overly powerful (compared to the rear wing) or secure. You will often see the front wing wobbling during a run. The length of the car makes the front wing more effective and the weakest point seems to be where that car broke. The wheelie bars are used to keep the front end down and to help with the launch characteristics of the crew chiefs tune and clutch pack setup. There's so much downforce and rotational energy going through the rear of those vehicles that chassis failure or breakage seems almost inevitable. Nitro funny cars are shorter (125inch chassis verses 300inch) and have much better aero, so they tend to run top speeds equivalent or faster than the Top Fuel cars even though they are much shorter and their drivetrain and weight configuration is completely different. The fastest speed for a Top Fuel car is 338mph and Funny car is 339mph. That's a lot of acceleration from a standing start to 1,000ft!

I found this video online for anyone who is interested. It's 4 years old, but it will give you some idea of wing performance.

Drag Racing in VIC...27th of February 2021

Wow, it has been a long time between drinks or racing to be more precise! I can't make it, but others should go along to see how quick their 2fiftycc bikes are. It's a Test & Tune day on an 1/8 mile track. $70 to go as hard as you want without worrying about the cops.

101mph it's too shabby. What did Nikki think she was going to run?

Not drag racing or land speed stuff, but one of these is a 2-stroke... (@GreyImport - feel free to move this post to another or new thread)

I'm not a 2-stroke person, but these guys seem to imply this engine's design got rid of the heads...I thought the whole point of a 2-stroke was you don't need a head!

    https://www.carthrottle.com/post/a-new-106l-two-stroke-diesel-engine-has-3-cylinders-and-6-pistons/

I know some of the offshore race boats have used Lamborghini V12 engines, but this is different...

    https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-worlds-first-outboard-v12-is-a-76-na-monster/

    Absolutely too funny...

Nothing new about opposed piston 2 stroke engines. Date back to 1882!!!!
First opposed piston 2 stroke diesel was in 1907. They even used them in supercharged form in aircraft in the 1930s.
Supposed to be very efficient due to the low thermal loses associated with no cylinder head. Biggest issue is in connecting the 2 crankshafts. There have even been opposed piston configurations with 3 crankshafts and cylinders arranged in a triangle.

I'm imagining a variation on the dual opposed piston two stroke which utilises petrol with no need for the super high combustion pressures of a diesel with something closer to the port timing and layout of a traditional two stroke, BUT it's using asymmetrical strokes, shorter for the exhaust AND cylinder offsets for the pistons at both ends to accentuate the asymmetrical timing - could be crazy, or it could go VROOM

Nothing new about opposed piston 2 stroke engines.

Years ago, I was at a Tank and heavy artillery museum in Cairns and they had a static display of one from the late 1950's. It was next to a Chieftain Tank, so I was curious and took a pic of the placard. I knew some ships used monster 2-stroke diesels, but this was a little different due to it's requirement to run on multiple types of fuel. Write-up follows if anyone is interested...
