Hey there, I have a FZR250 that I picked up a few years ago, rode for a bit then it got stolen, dropped a bunch of times and knocked out the ignition barrel, never got around to fixing it and now it doesn’t start. I’m hoping with your help I’ll be able to get it back to a cheap reliable commuter to deal with the hell scape that Sydney traffic is. When I got the bike it came with a massive amount of spares that are a mix or 2kr and 3ln and I feel like the bike itself is some mix of the two. As soon as I get this thing on the road I’ll be more than happy to donate anything left over if it’s any use to anyone here. And again, thanks in advance for the help! welcome and it is a 2kr.does it have a servo motor to adjust the exhaust flow or are the pipes and exhaust in one piece.
Welcome, a few years ago, I saw that bikes parked in Pacific Pde in Dee Why? - I remember the distinctive colour - it looked quite tidy back then considering it was living out in the weather. Am I right?
Yeh it would have been Oaks Ave. By that time all the damage had been done and the wiring was shorting out on the frame (I’m hoping this is the only real problem I’ll have to deal with) so I wasn’t to worried about the conditions it was exposed to, I just want game enough to try fixing it while I had nowhere secure to store all the pieces as I pulled it apart. It’s got some nice patches of rust on it now though so I’m going to have to pull the whole thing apart and sort that out before anything else. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All I can say is you've come to the right place if you need any help troubleshooting - you will find the people here the most knowledgeable & helpful you're ever likely to meet Shout out to everyone - you're really a great bunch
I have no doubt about this!! I feel like I’ve come really unprepared to this party haha, I’m be pulling everything down to treat the rust on the frame this week and get all the frame and part numbers for you guys. I already have quite a few questions but I’ll wait until I have some more photos of the situation to help explain them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Start up a project thread and take plenty of pics .... theres tons of info here and lots of resources on the FZRs https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?forums/your-250cc-projects.121/ https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?resources/categories/fzr250.25/ The bike actually looks pretty good with that paint Dont forget to check the tyres if its been sitting for a bit https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/tyre-information.1115/
looks like that is where the cable fits. as such it will be the later model as the early one had no variable exhaust valve. oil filter should be internal under the motor. if it has external screw on filter is later again.
Its the EXUP valve ... explained here ... https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?...-powervalve-information-and-maintenance.1099/
2KR is a generic name for the first 5 model FZR250's All the FZR250/R and FZX250s' engine number's start with 1HX, the last 6 digit's will tell you exactly what model you have, 2KR, 2RF, 3HX1, 3HX2, 3HX3 Check the frame numbers' last 6 digit's stamped into the headstem on the right side. Then you can tell if it still has the original engine if the 6 digit's match frame and engine. I'm guessing one of the latter model's And yeah your exhaust has the EXUP valve
2kr 136 424 So I’m assuming from the chart it’s a 2kr. I feel like the exup exhaust I have is one from a 3ln that I have the forks and swing arm for because there doesn’t seem to be a valve on the exhaust on there Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I believe it is a 1986 model that did not have the exuo valvein the exhaust. that model had a one piece header and muffler painted black.if it was the exup model it would have an electric servo motor mounted to the frame under the seat and it had 2 cables running to the exup valve under the motor.hope this helps.
That is the EXUP valve. Can you give is a wider shot of those headers? The EXUP servo motor will be mounted under the left hand rear panel. You will hear it cycle when the ignition/kill switch are turned on if it is present and working.
I don’t think this bike is an exup there’s no motor to control the valve... would it be worth trying to find a motor and convert it... if that’s even possible? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You would need the TCI unit that has the connections for the servo motor, as the EXUP valve opens or closes depending on engine RPM. If there is no EXUP valve, and the bike's engine number matches the frame, your best bet would be to find a set of headers correct for that year model. Locking the EXUP valve open or removing it and blocking off the opening on the side is an option, but it is not ideal. There may be design differences in the exhausts that relate to the profile of the camshafts which will determine how much torque is produced at low RPM.
I think your best move would be to see how much of this bike is original and what isnt and also what needs replacing (like the fork tubes) ... the 2KRs have a steel frame and the later 3LNs had a totally different aluminium 'deltabox' frame among other changes So swapping parts in and out is not that simple .... models with EXUP have a different TCI to control the servo for the EXUP valve for example Maybe keep it as stock as possible to get it running ok .... even looking out for a parts bike around the same model
Yeh it has the stock headers on it so I’ll just stick with them. Sounds like it could be more effort than it’s worth trying to fit the exup, since I’m just looking for a commuter Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
