That would be a good bike for someone learning.

 

Thanks Shane. I spoke to her before I went away and she was playing dumb. I wasn't keen to drive all that way for a non-runner that will probably need an engine rebuild.

 

I know this is in the UK but look at some of the prices of these bikes.. I am drooling at a couple of the MV Augusta's

Great collection of bikes. This monster brought back memories.

When I first worked at a shop they had an SC 500 there. I never rode it, too scared.

 

Interesting auction collection. I know @maelstrom is a Ducati person (I think), so I took the second pic awhile ago to post and forgot all about it until I saw the 1976 Ducati 750SS in the Bonhams auction list (top pic).

There was no 1976 'green frame'. The production model was 1974. That is a 750 Sport and someone has done a mediocre job on it. The 1975 model (my bike) was the first to use a square case engine but had the same Imola tank as the green frame. I also had the same upswept pipes you see in the pic and I used them when I raced my bike. They were part of the Imola race kit that you could buy over the counter. The one that Mr Grey posted is one of the later models that used the steel tank from the Sport.

Edit: I would say that the engine in that thing might have started life as a 750 GT. The kickstart shaft is too short, the matching timing cover is also from the GT as is the kickstart lever.

 

What's with the twin spot lights on the Bonhams bike?

 

Some considered it fashionable at the time because of the 24 hour races. The electrics on all early Ducatis were the worst garbage imaginable. A '74 model was flat out powering a single headlight never mind anything else.

Wow, that's great. Really good looking bike. I'd be happy to have that under my fat arse.

I read/heard somewhere that 1-down and the rest up was introduced because of an america rule/reg that you had to get neutral before getting first gear, so the rider couldn't accidentally get neutral when going down to 1st. 1-up and the rest down would have been okay too I guess. When BMW introduced the SMG gearbox on their road cars (M3) they had you pushing the shifter forward to go up a gear and backwards to go down a gear...seemed counter-intuitive to me. The next model they let the driver decide which way they wanted it to be and I think it's like that still.

@maelstrom why were the early Ducati electronics so bad?

 

The 1 up and 4 down is common on race bikes so your foot isn't stuck under the lever when you try to hook another gear.
The electrics, where to begin. The components were just total junk as were the connectors.

The solution was to rewire the bike and fit Japanese switches. I never had a problem and I rewired a zillion Ducatis.

 

It must have been an Italian thing. Most of the electrics in their early cars were crap too.

 

While I haven’t seen the ad, from the picture I would suggest its most likely not worth any more the $250.

This one is on Gumtree in SA. Talk about a botch job. You can’t really see it to well but the seat that is on there shows all the original seat brackets etc highly visible due to the gold frame.

But really $3300. Tell him he’s dreaming.
