I managed to get the front tyre off today. These really old hard tyres are a cow to get off.
I then got some Simple Green onto them to see what the paint is like and how much work needs to be done to bring the lips up to scratch.

Paint is etched so it needs to be redone. I used 240 then 400 wet and dry but it still needs more.
I do like the look with the polished lips but it is going to take a lot of work.
I am not even sure the rear is even salvageable for polishing.

Agree, I love the polished rims, I am just not looking forward to preparing the rear for polishing.

@Andych i would start the rear rim with paint stripper,
then give it a light polish with 0000 steel wool, it'll look a lot better quickly and give you some inspiration to get it smooth and shiny
Keep the job for a rainy day

The paint is not too bad once it is cleaned up... I don’t know that it needs stripping.
I am going to get a heavy duty etching mag wheel cleaner and see how it comes up after that...

Haha.. Rainy Day...I can’t wait that long.
I need to get the rear tyre off first... hopefully it won’t be as tough as the front one.

The stripper get's the clear coat off the outer lip, easier than sanding it off

OK.. I didnt realise they had clear on the machined surface as well.. I will give it a shot later on today.

I managed to get the rear tyre off the rim reasonably easy, well easier than the front.
So I then grabbed the new tin of Diggers Paint stripper and pit a good coating on one section of the rear rim and left it for an appropriate time, agitated it and then rinsed it off.
It took the paint off easy but it looks like there is no clear on the machined surfaces.
I will get some etching Aluminium cleaner tomorrow and try that as well.

I need to get myself some 15mm bar so I can set the rims up for painting on my Chassis stands.

I managed to get some Septone AliBrite today and mixed up a fairly dilute and small batch to try out on the rear rim..
The results are below.. I think I will do a better job on the weekend.. I will mix it up a bit more potent and with some nice acid proof rubber gloves I will try it again but with some steelo Steel Wool as well. This was just done with a Paint brush...

I picked up a fairly rough Zxr250C the other day, It went on the stand yesterday , plugs were removed , cleaned and a compression test done, 1,3 and 4 were at 150 psi cold and 2 was 125. Plugs went back in I started it using and aux tank for fuel. She started easily but was blowing loads of white smoke, I let her run for a bit hoping it would clear. I checked the oil level and it had way too much oil in her so after it cooled down a bit and dropped the oil, in goes some fresh oil and I fired it up again, it was running quite well and the smoke was almost gone , I gave her a few spirited revs to to 15000 rpm and next thing I heard the Chink, Chink Chink of metal breaking...…

    Spewing..

both exhaust valves, it was quite a graceful death.... chink chink chink … then flatline...…

the good news is that I just sold the front end for a café racer project , so all is not lost

To be fair, I don’t know, the previous owner said they had owned it for 4 months, they bought it from an enthusiast who said he is a zxr expert.

When I removed the engine, 2 out the 3 engine bolts were loose so I suspect it had an engine swap at some point, I only heard it run for 10 mins before it went bang

Had the indicator switch on Sylvie stop working on my commute home. Luckily I wasn't far from home and I was ahead of most of the traffic.

Went to replace the switch cluster with a spare and found the screw holding the switch lever on had just come loose.

    Soon had it working again! 50f7222359e8c0598023b7c54f486316.jpg 56ed4b6f07c9c456bff88644c9466101.jpg 41358e5e29526ae94b6139d3de0f04ec.jpg 08dae3e100c83540e6f945cb4b3609c9.jpg ddbe0a6e783c8b83b3aa3be6c14cb261.jpg 02e48c561885717e29673b66a1352db2.jpg

I finally swapped the mufflers on the zxr back to the super-loud Ballistic. There is more torque, but clearly still a problem. Last time I fueled, I got 12.5km/L, and there spluttering is all the more noticeable when played at 80+dB from the muffler!

Had a spare 1/2 hr yesterday afternoon before it got dark so I had a bit of go at cleaning up 1 side of the rear wheel with the Ali Brite mixed a little stronger.

Came up ok, I will finish the rest of the wheel and then pull out the steel wool and polishing mops I think.
