Just picked up a 1992 zxr250 Test rode perfect and rode perfectly home 30/45 min ride However... The bike is now hesitant to run at all, smells extremely rich, it runs good if I remove the tank and air box lid, ie lean it out slightly Air filter doesn’t look to be restricted Where’s the best places to start looking for an issue?? Hoping something simple like a vacuum leak! Also possible a crook fuel tap? Not sure if it will only run on prime or not, I’ll have to check this arvo
Check that the choke cable & plunger mechanism are not jammed and that all plungers are seated in the off position. Check float height and float needles
Thanks mate, choke cable seems fine I haven’t checked the plungers yet, found a stripped screw on the air box connecting to the carbs so I’ll have to drill that out first!
Update, choke plungers are working as they should, bike ran perfect today for 5/10 mins reving/idleing. Rode all sweet until I stopped at the lights, it just died as soon as I pulled the clutch in. Then wouldn’t start but would re started 30-40 mins later Running rich? I also have a slight hot joint on the rectifier so I’ll have to get that sorted as well...
Prime is only used to fill the fuel bowls , do not run it on prime When it won’t start after running for a bit , put your ear near the fuel cap and open it with the key, if you hear a hiss then there is a good chance that the breather maybe blocked which causes negative pressure in the tank . You can use some whipper snipper line to push down the tank breather pipe to ensure it is not blocked. Welcome to the forum
Had the same issue . Could definitely be ignition related, when you try and restart it does is pop out the exhaust a couple of times but not start?
Just annoyed my whole street and a did some laps with the fuel cap open..seems to start and run fine now..there is a hesitation though around 6-8k rpm Bike just want to bog, then screams all the way to 18000 after about 10k
The 6000-8000 bog is common, it’s is the individual seals between each carb that have worn, get a seal kit from litetek.co
I've never been able to fully remove that bogging. It was terrible when I first got my bike, down to a little flat spot when accelerating / hiccup after holding constant low throttle around 7000rpm since doing those seals, airbox seals, carb boots and vacuum lines.
