@ShaneP Agree with you but the TT bikes that are based on road bikes would still slow down if you dropped the max capacity to 750cc. In MotoGP it would be pointless they would just get more expensive. Getting a bit off topic but, when the 800cc limit came out Ducati had a huge power advantage. Which they claimed was not due to their lack of valve springs (yeah right). Then the Japanese finally caught up and threw their valve springs in the bin and the only thing that Ducati had left was that Stoner person.

i of course watched the isle of man tt
to be honest i think its lost direction Why is there no 125 or 250 cc races they seem to have lost the art of kinetic riding . With a low power engine its about the conversation of energy kinetik riding if you will we do not all ride around with 1000cc plus
I cannot understand why it is not respected that to get a small capacity engine around the track is not as well regarded as putting 200 bhp around the same course
i find most of my most enjoyable riding is working a limited capacity

human reflexes will be the limiter not size of the bikes , unlike rally cars who have a navigator these riders have to memorise each and every cornor and what speed/ gear to take them at as well as keeping close company with other riders , limit the size of bikes and they will just find ways to go faster .. I am in amazement of what these guys do

Yes, I'd agree with that. I too feel smaller capacity classes should be (re)introduced. The WSBK events have a 300cc class which normally has 40-50 riders competing. Given how many manufacturers are building smaller capacity bikes these days you'd think a IOMTT 300cc class would be a given. Alas, their smallest capacity class is the Supersport 600cc.

The 125 and 250cc 2-stroke bikes aren't for sale any more, so it is a natural death to those. But it seems the LAMS bikes are the new base category - 650 twins (lightweight TT). I'm not sure of the details, but I believe they have a 40-60hp limit, production specs sort of race. Maybe I should research before posting... I'll do it now, instead.

Shane, that would very impressive for a 40-60hp 650cc to do a lap in 122.75mph! The lightweight class does have restrictions, but they still get over 100 ponies from the engine. The Italian PATON bike does well in this class as does the Kawasaki 650 twin. The commentators like this class because, in their words, the rider is riding the bike and not just hanging on for grim death.

Thanks for clarifying, Frank. Guess that's the new 250 class.

The 500 two stroke class downscaled to keep a power to weight ratio with suspension and tyre improvements would have been bugger quick

Has anyone come across any of the results of the Suter MMX500 - that probably fits the bill - it's not as highly strung as the GP bikes were, light though

At about $170,000, 125kg and 195hp, I think it gives the gp bikes a run for their equally-absurd money.

Yeah it's up there price wise - weren't the 500GP bikes, specifically the NSR500, hitting 250HP or thereabouts in the end?

Well the NSR500 is quoted as 180PS in it's final incarnation - that put the Suter on par

So we all agree they should bring back the 400cc 4 cylinder sports bikes. They used to race them at the IOM too.

If you mean to the general public, then I'm in favour of it. But is it viable? The 600 is facing a death of infeasibility, but if the 400 was a learner bike in major markets and kept the HP limit about 60hp, then it might become the new 600. But it is no cheaper to make a 400 than a litre bike (slightly less material, all the same machining), and who wants to spend $15k on a new 400? Development costs will be down a little, that's about it.

Some manufacturers are using 600/650s with smaller bores to get by the laws but they end up as a heavy under powered bikes. Most new bike buyers are caught up in the 'bigger is better' and want the biggest bike they can ride/afford.

yep that's why the 250s have fallen out of favour since the intro of the lams laws .. ie why get a 250 when can get a 650 mindset even though most of the 250s are better bikes especially to learn on (and to ride) , actually its great for them in the know , can pick up good cond low mileage 250 for a fraction of what they are worth 2nd hand

What are you riding these days? :p

The likes of the klr650 and twin 650 LAMS bikes are nice to ride with torque available while cruising, rather than having to down shift 3-4 gears to overtake someone. And ABS is probably worthwhile - not that I've had it on a bike (and would disable it on an older bike if I was concerned about the quality of the electronics - Bosch).

The CF650 you saw at Texas, XL250 and today did 115Km on my ZZR250. Fun little bike to throw around and so easy to ride. Can see why these little Kawasaki twins are so popular.
