    From https://www.bicycles.net.au/2018/05...n-cyclists-bike-shops-and-overseas-retailers/

Christopher Jones: In the case that a smaller overseas business unexpectedly exceeds the $75,000 threshold, what happens? Are they liable to pay the ‘uncollected’ GST or is $75,000 a threshold and they only are liable for GST payments above this value?

ATO spokesperson: When a business reaches the threshold of $75,000 in sales to consumers in Australia 12 month period, they must register for GST within 21 days and apply GST to sales from the date they were required to be registered.

We do not sell anything like AUD75000 annually to Aus and this GST has virtually zero chance of affecting us in the near future. If we were ever selling that volume we would appoint distributors at which point it is moot to us.

    Cheers
    Blair

More to the point the Australian Tax Office has no ******* jurisdiction whatsoever to even suggest that an overseas business register for GST - they're off in fantasy land, led by this man

Too funny. Are they going to send a dweeb here to audit us? I have had a lot of fun with those wankers in the past.

Looking at it, ebay will perhaps try and collect it - they'll get belted with people leaving in droves, Amazon has already said they'll limit Aus customers to the Aus site which means the good are local in their AUS warehouse.

aliexpress and all of the others, if they collect it, doubtful they will pass it on, no legislation to require them to do so - they'll just keep it as an inconvenience charge for having to put up with the idiotic Aus Govt. making ridiculous demands.

All the rest which do not have an Aus registered business or subsidiary will likely say go jump.

There will be a big backlash from this and I predict the measure is overturned, they already priced the possibility of all incoming goods being taxed with GST regardless of price - 4 billion to collect 2 billion in revenue.

This is a dumb idea, that was a dumb idea, they're just a wellspring of dumb ideas...

The eBay sellers do not have to collect it unless they sell more than the 75000 pa to Aus customers. How is eBay going to deal with that? Their job is doing nothing except making hideous web sites and collecting commissions.

I predict the Chinese (aliexpress etc.) will tell the ATO to go jump.

Curiously Amazon is both a seller themselves as well as a listing site for other sellers, so you've got a complete quagmire there, restriction to the Aus site removes an enormous amount of products which may not have been liable for GST anyway...

Unfortunately, treason is the highest punishable crime in all "democratic" countries. Otherwise, you'd just go down to your local council, state and federal government offices with your trusty guillotine and give it the old "let them eat cake" routine. I'm so sick of these career politicians taxing us to death without a second thought because it doesn't affect them.

Bottom line is as consumers we will pay more for online purchases, regardless of who gets what where and when....we are so apathetic in this country and they know it :)

At the end of the day there is nothing we can do about it... it is all a bit like when GST first came in.. it was all doom and gloom but we quickly got used to it and frankly 99% of people dont take any notice of the GST...
And as for Overseas purchases.. on a lot of mine the home country hits you with a local tax.. and while you could maybe claim it back it just isnt worth the effort.
Storm in a tea cup for the consumer.. not sure how it will affect some sellers though.
