Help No final drive.

I've broken something but have no idea what. I was riding home the other day and being a little too agressive down shifting for a corner when i had a sudden loss of drive. The engine still runs fine and i can hear the click from each of the gears but have no drive to the wheel. I have removed the clutch cover and checked the gears that connect the engine to the clutch and gearbox, everything is fine there. So as a guess and fear is that it might be a broken shaft some where.

 

Well I had something similar happen on my FZR250 - the retaining nut for the sprocket made it's way free and then the sprocket made it's way off of the shaft splines to the end where the thread used to live

 

I never thought to look at the sprocket.

 

yup missing the sprocket retaining nut.

 

yeah they've been rounded off

 

Unfortunately you need a new output shaft by the look of things

 

Looking at old pictures there wasn't one on it when i bought the bike.

Look I agree with Murdo, there is plenty of spline left to keep you going, clean the spline & the inside of the sprocket thoroughly, & apply Loctite 262 (Red) to the splines & retaining nut, & yes fit the correct lock washer, that is a washer that is splined on the inside & once tightened to the correct torque figure you use a punch to fold an external edge up over one of the flat edges of the nut. Then wait for at least 8 hours for the loctite to cure before using the bike.

 

Unfortunately only the first 2 threads arn't damaged. All the others have been rounded off when the sprocket came off the splines. I think trying to get adequate tension would only strip them.

 

If your going to replace the motor tack weld a new sprocket on..if you decide to later to do repairs/rebuild just grind it off as the shaft is a total loss
