Okay, It's not a 2fiftycc, so I won't take up too much space on this thread. I recently started to track down an electrical issue with my Vmax. What started as a normal investigative task has turned into a major episode. Not that I'm complaining, but lots to do still. The story so far... I've had this bike for about 4 or 5 years. Bought it from a guy in NSW country. Lets call him a LSOS. I've stopped believing previous owners when they say it's "great". I've learnt what I think is great seems to differ wildly with most other people. Anyhoot, after the normal cleanup, fluid change and maintenance, I rode her for a while and then parked her while other projects took over. The bike had always struggled to start and a new battery hadn't fixed this so this was my first "job" when I took the covers off her recently. Went straight to the starter as this seemed like the most likely culprit. To get to the starter you almost need to pull the front off the bike. I did because I didn't want to break anything. The starter was covered in oil and the armature was not making good contact. Also, this is a very early Vmax and some came from the factory with a 2-brush starter. I rebuilt the starter and it checks out fine to the specs in the manual, so we're ready to go. While I had the front wheel off I realised the tyre was 11 years old. Still not too bad, but off to Pablo's I go for a nice new sticky black thing. Now, this bike is the only bike I use the back brake on. It has single pot calipers up front and they are not great. While apart I notice they're a bit weepy, so off they come for a service. Forks look okay (no weeping), but a small sample of the fork oil stunk and was black, so off they come for a rebuild. The bike "tram-tracked" a bit, but given the frame on these things is marginal, I just rode it as is. Now with everything off I can see the error of my ways. The headstem bearings have no grease and are basically stuck in place. Weird that the bike was rideable with this much wrong. You guessed it, out they came and in goes a new set of roller bearings. And finally, the electrics on these old bikes is flakey, so I took the opportunity to upgrade some of the wiring and include a fan bypass switch for those traffic light moments on 40 degree days. I should have her back together in a few weeks...yes, due to multiple commitments and "must do" activities, I won't be touching the bike again for at least 2 weeks after tomorrow. It will be good if I can get the front end on her before I head off. See you soon.
My 3LN3 Service Manual Supplement is posted and on it's way to me Seller sent me a message saying he couldn't list it on ebay due to some problem and said i'd have to get it through Buyee (more expensive) I said thank's for trying and that i would look elsewhere for it. He then sent me a message saying that if i bought a TT250R service manual off him for $40 inc post on ebay that he would include the FZR250R 3LN3 Service Manual Supp I thought about it then had a look on his listing's again, i was looking for the link to the listing to see if he would sell me the 3LN7 service Manual Supp and include the 3LN3 Supplement ? When looking at his listing's i found that they had listed the 3LN3 Supplement 3 hour's before for $19 plus post so i bought it there and then. Just had a message from him then and it say's thank's for buying from him and my service manual/s are on their way, hmm wonder if i'm getting 1 or 2 ? The seller currently has over 65,000 listing's for sale on ebay... https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/ts-parts-jp/m.html?item=282882372319&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
the honda cb350 points cover is pressed metal held on by 2 screws and serves no bearing support. however the housing has 2 eccentric spindles to rotate for valve clearance and these were not altered and when setting the spark the motor was only turned in direction motor turns and there was no evidence of binding. i believe the valve was faultyand will be showing the dr specialist the head and barrells before anything is bought.denis believes new engine needed but i believe can be rebuilt.as i heard today of a death in the family will be heading back to newey after drags and then off to canberra.a busy time as of to cowra soon to pick up spares fizzer. not bike but falcon bf- water from washer bottle no flow so new motor.trouble was slime on filter which is also sealing rubber gasket.clean slime off twice and new motor then test and have had a wet screen. 13.90 plus half hour in sun and all is well.
The zxr passed its rwc today, i was riding it down to department of transport to pay my rego fee when it cut out, I managed to get her going and she idled fine but as soon as I got over 5000rpm, she would cough, splutter and conk out. I had heaps of fuel, I tried running it on prime, that didn’t help, I worked out if I kept it under 4500 rpm, that I could nurse it home. Not the most fun ride, but at least it is back at the shop. Guess what I am doing tomorrow... carbs. I’m betting a jet has come loose
I stroked and spoke to the 400 today, assuring her that I hadn't forgotten about our treasured relationship...
Has the ZXR been stabled anywhere near an FZR? Perhaps it's caught some sort of viral infection that affects carbs...
I fitted new lighter rear springs to the GB today, so much better now it doesn't top out on mild bumps .....Id like to say Ive lost weight but na! The bikes has... unbolt it, look at it,do I need this? if no throw over shoulder and forget about it, if yes can I find something lighter if not make it lighter
I've spent about 3 weeks trying to fix a 4-stroke scooter; starts easy but breaks down when trying to accelerate. Checked valves and timing, tried a new carby, new coil, new spark plugs, new/different CDI units, even had the top off the carby to test the slider - runs best with closed slider but can run spluttering with slider open or even removed. It seems to be the spark, not good enough to fire when the cylinder is full of air. Very strange. But now that I've given up on that, I can go back to pulling down the marauder to hone the bore and free up the rings, or to across carbies, or rebuild the engine in the ute, or shim the daihatsu valves, or sort out the wr250f, or combine the 2 xr200 after buying one yesterday. Then again, the parts for the zxr might arrive and I could finish that... Or start one of the other half a dozen projects I have here... Let's not do that yet.
Well, carbs came off, number 3 cylinder was full of fuel, pulled the carbs down and the fuel valve was ordinary at best and the seat was butchered with plier marks and the seal was squashed , grabbed a spare seat and have reassembled and test ridden and she is working like a bought one I have missed riding zxr’s , put a big smile on my face as I went through the gears
Haha, no I just mean how long it takes me to get things done and how many things I am trying to get done at the same time, but your list makes me feel better. The CBR will be running again soon but it's primary function is development mule anyway. A whole host of things for MC22's are in the pipeline because of that purchase.
Ouch, so at the very least you need a new liner and cylinder head. Plus the valves etc Looks expensive. Dennis may have been right looking for another engine. If you can find one in good condition. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
