I stumbled across this thread which made for an interesting read. http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php?topic=31003.0 So many opinions on what works what doesn't etc... couldn't find a thread here specifically on this but what do people do? When they can't be replaced (or are expensive) ?
I had a failed bid some time ago .... the pot actually went in the wheelie bin today http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/cooking-your-old-rubber-bits.1311/#post-10529
I read that oil of wintergreen stuff ages ago... but buying the stuff was expensive so I never went and did it.
have heard good stuff on wintergreen oil alright, i read a thread a while back, im sure it was on this site, about soaking them in warm coolant overnight, apparently the conditioners in the coolant are what stop the rubber hoses from going hard. must see if i can dig up the thread. edit: found it http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/wont-start-and-backfiring.7386/#post-74475
Use some Dielectric Grease to soften them, it will need a few coat's over a couple of week's Smear it on, rub it in and leave it to soak in, reapply once the greasy shine has gone thin Honda sell it- around $20 a tube BMW sell's it. it's called Gummi Pfledge Stift Or - Chemlube $23 for 150 grams You can get a small tube from Bunning's for $5 for 15 gram's https://www.bunnings.com.au/hydroseal-15g-thread-lubricant-tube_p4923331
i've had success using a cigarette lighter on the end of rubber hoses and whatnot to make them slide over a tough fitting. definitely not the best way to do it (and never on rubber fuel lines) but itll do in an emergency (as long as you dont burn the rubber or totally melt it) little haggard tip for the broke folks out there
I actually read about brake fluid recently, so I tried it. Soaked some boots overnight and absolutely nothing. Write that off the list!
I might try that. More than anything I want a cost effective process that works - some can be replaced cost effectively while some can't.
Can get brand new ones on yahoo japan. https://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/impex-mall/084-h0512-3ln-135.html
Oil of wintergreen seems to be the ticket, the trick in this thread is the carrier which he used, Isopropyl alcohol https://v4musclebike.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13477 I just found methyl salicylate here for a sensible price https://www.rangeproducts.com.au/shop/raw-materials/methyl-salicylate/
